A crib that is placed near your bed can help you keep your baby close to you at night without the need to get up. The breathable fabric allows you to easily see your baby and is easy to lower when you require an early feeding.
Some double as moses' baskets.
What is a bedside crib?
A bedside crib (also known as a co-sleeper or bassinet) is a small baby crib that is attached to your adult bed, allowing your infant to sleep safely next to you. It's a method of co-sleeping that is safe and doesn't increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) like bedsharing, and can help you bond with your new arrival.
These cots often have a side that is able to be lowered, so you can easily reach your newborn throughout the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly beneficial for mums recovering from a c-section. Many of them are foldable or portable, so you can take them on your travels and use them as a temporary sleeping solution for newborns who aren't quite ready to move to a larger cot.
Choose a crib that has an air-conditioned mattress, as well as a protective cover that will keep your baby safe from staining. You'll also want to buy baby-safe items like a blanket, teether and cuddly toys.
If you're looking for a longer-term option, some cribs have conversion kits that allow you to convert them into a cot or toddler bed when the time comes. This will extend their life and make the transition easier. Some models have a removable portion at the top that can be transformed into the bassinet. Some can be used in conjunction with a regular adult bed or a high-rise model. This is a good choice for families that are planning on frequent travel or switching rooms throughout the night. You should also consider the size of your bedroom to ensure that you can fit the crib comfortably. A lot of cribs have a riser which can be used to create an inclined position for infants who suffer from reflux.
The Joie Roomie Glide
The Roomie Glide, a bedside crib manufactured by the English brand Joie is a wonderful addition to their line of high-quality baby products. The co-sleeper was created to enable parents to bond and sleep side by side with their babies without sharing one bed. It's packed with features that help make bonding between parent and baby secure, easy, and fun.
A gentle rocking motion can be activated by pressing a button. This gentle rhythm will help soothe your baby to sleep without disrupting their natural sleep patterns. This is ideal for toddlers and older infants who struggle to settle. It can aid in digestive issues such as colic and reflux.
The crib can be locked into its place after the rocking has been finished to stop it from moving and can also be secured to the bed's side by clips and straps. This makes the crib very solid and secure and allows you to sleep soundly without worrying that your baby will roll off into the middle. The round shape of the cocoon is complemented by softly padding on the sides and double mesh windows at both ends. This allows for airflow while ensuring your baby's safety.
The mattress is soft and firm. It is covered in a washable material. The aluminum frame is lightweight, making the crib extremely lightweight and easy to set up. The four rubber-covered wheels lockable ensure that the crib does not leave marks on your flooring and is easy to move. It is easy to clean with wipeable woven fabrics and is easy to put in a backpack, making it ideal for extended absences from home.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air
This premium model is designed to be a safe next-to-me-crib from birth to 6 months. It has bars with rocking to make it easy to move and castors. Its deluxe airflow mattress offers an ideal sleeping surface and the ventilation panels ensure your baby is kept cool. There are 6 different height settings including an incline setting to aid in reducing reflux and congestion.
Unlike some bedside cribs that can be a nightmare to clean due to their endless stream of dribble and snot, the Tutti Bambini CoZeeAir has a wipe-clean liner and fabric that can be removed to wash in the machine. It also has a top bar which can be easily lowered to allow for feeding at night without the need to juggle zips.
Anna discovered that the CoZee could provide a safe, comfortable sleeping space for her baby. She was pleased that it didn't sway like other models, so it didn't wake her at night when she was trying to comfort her baby for feeds. She also enjoyed the fact that the side could be lowered so she didn't have to reach over her partner to pull the baby to feed her at night.
The CoZee is available in charcoal and oak and was a stylish addition to the bedroom. It's more of a designer piece than some of the other cribs that we've tested, and can appear rather utilitarian. It's also quite light at just 11kg and comes with a carry case so you can take it away on holidays or if you're moving home. The only things you'll have to purchase are a waterproof sheet and a safety strap for co-sleeping. The instructions and images are easy to follow when you first open the box.
The Maxi-Cosi Lora
The Iora is an infant bassinet designed to make parents feel more connected to their infant while they sleep. It adjusts upwards and downwards and moves through three slide positions to fit beside the parent's bed, or in the corner of the room, to ensure that your baby is close at hand. The mesh siding allows air to flow through and allows you to quickly see your baby. You can also keep any extra pajamas or items in the large basket underneath.
The Iora is a smaller bedside cot that can fold flat. It also comes with a travel case to allow it to be carried anywhere. It was easy to move around from room to room, and our mum testers believed it was the perfect size for a bedside cot used crib. The large storage basket is ideal to store bedding and nappies.
This is a great choice for parents who wish to co-sleep but don't want to share their bed. If one of the parents has mobility issues such as back pain or arthritis. Our mum testers love the ease with which they can access their child in the Iora, and that it comes with an optional reflux incline to help with gas.
Our mums appreciate that the mattress follows NICE guidelines. These include placing the baby in the Moses basket or crib on its own, without toys, blankets and pillows. They also say that the mattress is firm and comfortable for baby and is easy to find sheets for. It isn't as light as other cribs for bedside crib to cot use, though it is a good choice if you are looking for something lighter and easier to move around, look at other options on our list.
